My first experience in starting a business was through team Sports Monkey. Shifting from idea to idea and not finding our passion led to our inevitable failure. Finding a problem to solve is one of the most important parts of a business and I won't forget what I've learned.

Joining Scent Sacks has been a huge learning experience. Bouncing from one challenge to the next has taught me what Entrepreneurship is really about. From looking for a manufacturer to sewing myself and finally looking for a manufacturer again, there's been many highs and lows during the past 10 months.

I officially joined EXA just a few days before the NIU Big Ideas Pitch competition. The experience of developing a pitch in a very short time and winning 1st place was amazing! Since joining, my primary task has been finding an affordable and reliable professional to make a 3D prototyping design in order to get closer to having a finished 3-in-1 grip strengthening product.

Sewing for Scent Sacks

NIU Big Ideas Pitch

Early in the school year, one of the biggest struggles for Scent Sacks was finding a professional who could sew our products for a reasonable price. So, I took it upon myself to learn how to sew (with the help of my dad) to start making our first salable model of the Scent Sack. Of course there was frustration and struggles. With my lack of technique there were many sewing errors and the finished product wasn't exactly perfect or even near good looking. Nevertheless, we used these initial models to validate our business concept further and I even learned a new skill. Although many past decisions may seem like a waste of time, times like these are the best learning experience in the long run.

Competing in the NIU Big Ideas Pitch and ultimately winning 1st place out of the 130 students from 19 different schools was an amazing experience. Going into it, I didn't know what to expect for our audience and competition, but pitching the idea with Vinay and Zide in front of a room completely full of judges and NIU business students was certainly a time to remember. I look forward to continuing to work with team EXA.
